This is a darkly comic examination of the perils, boredom and confusion that dominate daily life in the ranks. Set in Singapore, in 1950, a crop of young British soldiers are trained for war, but also for love. Phillipa is the daughter of British Sergeant Major Raskin. And she is the sole object for the sexual prospects of the raw recruits known as the “virgin soldiers.” Although Phillipa responds to Private Brigg’s lead at a military dance, he is too drunk to perform. However when the more mature Sgt. Driscoll tries to make a move on Phillipa, he learns that she too is a reluctant virgin.
