Stars And Bars (1988, U.S.A.)

Young Englishman Henderson Dores (Daniel Day-Lewis) is yearning to give up his genteel British ways and be a bold and brash American.  He gets his chance when his New York firm sends him south.  He’s to acquire a Renoir painting from Loomis Gage (Harry Dean Stanton), the eccentric head of an unusual family.

Arriving in Luxora Beach, Georgia, Dores meets Gage’s far-out family but learns that the Renoir has been promised to Mr. Sereno.  So he’s pursued by Sereno, but escapes the crazy Gage clan, and finally wins Irene, his true love.

Also stars Joan Cusack, Glenne Headly, Dennis Farina, Martha Plimpton, Keith David and Harry Dean Staunton.
