Summertree (1971, U.S.A.)

As he lies dying in Vietnam, a young soldier (Michael Douglas) recalls the events leading up to this moment. He remembers his sweetheart (Brenda Vaccaro), to whom he couldn’t make a commitment. Then there’s the battles he with his parents.  Firstly,  when he skipped college to become a musician, and then when he planned to dodge the draft.  And finally, he remembers the “summertree”.  This is where he spent many of his happiest days before being sent to Southeast Asia.

Directed by actor-singer Anthony Newley, this moving  drama was based on Ron Cowen’s off-Broadway play.
